What Is Bubble Tea?
Bubble tea — also known as boba — is more than a drink. It is a cup of tea, milk and chewy tapioca pearls that became a shared language for a whole generation.
It started as a small experiment in a Taiwanese tea shop and grew into a daily ritual on almost every continent: something you queue for with friends, customize to your exact taste, and photograph before the first sip.
Where It Began
Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s, when tea shops were looking for new ways to modernize traditional tea culture. The original version was simple: brewed tea, milk or creamer, sweetener, and chewy tapioca pearls made from cassava starch.
The name "bubble tea" originally referred to the foam bubbles created when the drink was shaken — not the pearls at the bottom of the cup. Over time, the pearls became the drink's most recognizable feature, and the name stuck for both.
Why the Pearls?
Tapioca pearls turned a familiar beverage into something you chew as well as drink. That texture — soft, springy, slightly sweet — is what makes bubble tea unmistakable.
Pearls also opened the door to everything that followed: grass jelly, pudding, taro, popping boba, cheese foam. Every new topping is a small reinvention of the same idea.
